FIRE Escape: Gaer Hall – This week!

Gaer Hall – In all it’s glory

4 sleeps until Gaer Hall. It’s almost upon us….

Arrival is from 3.30pm on Friday 18th March. We’ve paid for the house up until 5pm on Sunday 20th March. Lou and I will arrive slightly before this time to select the biggest & best bedroom,to hide the rotten fish, and  to check that everything else is OK! πŸ˜‰

If any of you want my personal mobile number, please drop me an email. I’m not sure what the reception is going to be like. If in doubt, an email will work as we have wifi.

What we do during that time is totally up to us. I emphasise the last word ‘us’ because, aside from my guided Morning Routine’s on Sat and Sun morning, I don’t have anything else planned. No talks, no games, no vaginal steams*, nothing.

I’ve left the whole weekend free for our collective contribution. The loose format worked really well last time, so why change a winning formula?

If anyone would like to offer their time and knowledge to do an informal chat on a particular topic, please share the details in the comments below. I think they went down well last time.

Alternatively, if any of you have a desire to set up some outdoor games, a BBQ or ‘Gaer’s Got Talent’ competition, please share your thoughts in the comments below.

Food

I would like to get the conversation of food started. This question has been fired at me by a couple of people.

In order to prevent a dozen people bringing a loaf of bread and a 4-pinter of milk each, I will pick up a couple of loaves of bread (seeded/multi-grain variety), a 4 pint carton of semi skimmed milk, tea bags and coffee. If anyone has any specific dietary requirements and wants to bring their own, please do so. Zero offense taken!

I’m waiting for the owner to call me back and confirm that they have things like sugar, olive oil etc. I will update the post when she gets back to me.

At the last Gathering we had a couple of people volunteering to cook for the whole group, which was a wonderful gesture, but a big undertaking. I don’t expect anyone to make the same offer with the increased numbers this time around.
However, if you are interested in chipping in (financially/cooking) to create breakfasts, lunches and evening meals in smaller numbers, please let us all know below.

And failing that, we can discuss potential meal shares/options in person on Friday or Saturday, and then take a trip into the local town once we’ve worked out who eats what.

There might be some of you that would prefer to buy and prep food for themselves, and I want to be clear that that is totally fine and no-one is under pressure to cook and eat communally.

Lou and I would be happy to cook in a group, or cater for ourselves. We’re happy either way.

We were fortunate enough to have Elaine attend the last gathering, a professional pastry chef! She baked a batch of flapjacks, shortbread and chocolate pudding that were unbelievably good. If anyone else has even a mild baking interest, I would encourage you to display your talents wholeheartedly this coming weekend! πŸ™‚

I wanted to use this post to instigate a conversation among the attendees about food and activities.

If you’re coming along, please let us all know what you think. Even if you aren’t bothered, let us know that.

If any of you have mass supplies of veggies, biscuits or fillet steaks, let us know.

Finally, if you have any specific questions about the weekend that haven’t been answered – you know what to do! Yes, be quiet and deal with it. πŸ™‚

See you all very soon!

    Hi Huw,

With Matched Betting / Cheltenham festival it's unlikely we'll be hitting the road much before 4pm so should be arriving around 6pm on the evening…

We're fully flexible with meal options, neither of us are allergic to anything and completely open to any meals. We're also happy to buy / help with ingredients and cooking where necessary just tell us what, when and where.

    Looking forward to it!

    Cora / TMM.

    Hey Huw

I'll buy whatever food/ingredients too (eggs and bacon for Sunday breakfast?) – let me know, I'll do my shop on Friday night.

Also, is there a pub nearby or are we bringing our own? πŸ™‚

Come to think of it, I'll check up to see if any of my homebrews are ready, see if anyone is brave enough to try!

@Cora – would be interested in chatting to you about matched betting if you don't mind!

See you all there – looking forward to it!

Sounds good to me Cora. I hope you make a killing on the races this week! Good luck!

Thanks for providing your stance on food. Hopefully we'll have a better idea of what to bring in the next 24-48 hours.

    See you Friday!

    Hey Weenie,

Thank you for the kind offer of Sunday breakfast. Sounds perfect. I'm happy to provide funds into ingredients too. Even if its giving you cash on the weekend for your shopping.

I haven't searched local pubs. Last time we went for a brief walk in the village, but we mainly stayed in the house and talked. I'm not sure how this one will pan out, but I'm perfectly happy sipping on some wine and chatting away at the house with my slippers on! πŸ™‚

Richard emailed me to say he'll bring half a dozen or so bottles of wine, I'm not sure what he do on the Saturday night though? πŸ˜‰ I thoroughly enjoyed the homebrew batch you brought to SoA last year, and I'm not a beer/ale drinker.

    See you this week!

    Three more sleeps!

I'll eat anything and will shop/cook as needed and happy to support/wash up for someone who knows what they are doing.

I have a little bit of homebrew (I'm between batches) and can bring some spirits? I have a preference for drinking in rather than out, and for drinking over sobriety, but not deal breakers.

Is anyone else interested in watching the F1 and/or rugby? I'm planning on watching the F1 early on Sunday morning and possibly Saturday morning (or highlights later on). I'll figure out a way to stay out of the way of the morning routine folks when we get there.

    So excited about catching up,

    Emma

    Hi,
Happy to bake a few breads (2, 3, 4) and muffins and make some more if required. Happy to make a stew or two – apologies in advance as the stew would have meat in it.

Depending on the number of people I might need help with chopping though.

    Regards, Pinch

I will be setting off Friday morning with an aim to be there for 3:30pm.

Other than Turkish Delight I will eat anything. I am willing to go along with whatever the consensus’s is regarding food although I must say I can't cook, with boiling water about my limit.

I have started to put a few thing together for the weekend, at present it stands at 6 bottles of wine and some muesli (so that's me sorted then).

Really looking forward to meeting up with familiar faces and some new ones.

Thank you for the kind suggestions Pinch. That sounds awesome. I won't buy bread in that case.

Like Richard, I'm happy to be assistant chef, chief chopper, and/or dish washer.

Sounds great Emma! Thanks for sharing.

I'm into the Rugby and will almost certainly be watching it or have it on in the background anyway. You're more than welcome to watch F1.

This needs to be a relaxing fun weekend for everyone. See you very soon!

    Hello!

Really excited about my first FIRE experience, even though I'll just be a "part-timer", there for Friday to Saturday midday. I'll aim to get there as close to 3.30pm as possible on the Friday (though it's proving to be quite a busy week, so it may be a bit later). I'm assuming there's plenty of room for parking?

I'd really like to join in with any communal plans for cooking on Friday. I'd be happy to join in assisting with whatever I can, though I'm not a particularly experienced/confident cook so would prefer to "help" rather than "lead" the cooking! Obviously will chip in whatever monetary contribution is needed toward food, I don't have any special dietary requirements. No doubt I'll bring along some wine, or whatever tipple I'm feeling in the mood for on the day to add to the alcohol stock… πŸ˜‰

If I manage to find the time on Thursday (amongst Paddy's Day celebrations – I'm not Irish, but any excuse for a party and I have Irish friends!) I will endeavour to bake some cookies to bring along as my baking contribution!

    See you all on Friday!

Checking last night, only a few bottles of my homebrew appear to be ready so I'll bring those along. If no more are ready by the weekend, I'll supplement with some shop-bought beers!

    Hi Huw,

me and Martina will hopefully be arriving mid-late morning on Saturday. Hoping to stay 'til dinner, but not 100% sure yet. We'll be driving over from Birmingham.

I am strictly off dairy at the moment and am pretty allergic to sesame seeds πŸ™

As always, happy to cook and bring food. Martina doesn't have any allergies as far as I know.

I am going to check if I've got any homebrew left too… I have still got the one Weenie gave out at SoA, I never drank it because I found out I was pregnant right after and so it went into our 'party' fridge. I might bring it so we can experience the vintage πŸ˜‰

See you and Lou on Saturday (so looking forward to catching up again in person),

Great to hear M. Likewise, Lou and I are very excited about meeting up with old friends, and meeting new people.

It looks like collectively, everyone's open for group cooking/contribution, which is nice.

It'll be much easier to organise when everyone's all together. Hopefully, upon you're arrival we'll have the meal plans set up for Sat and Sun.

Have a safe trip down, and see you both very soon!

    Hi Huw,

Just to introduce myself by posting here as you suggested in our e-mail conversation. As another first timer and avid reader of FI blogs, I'm looking forward to meeting everyone this weekend – will be around from about mid-day on Saturday for the rest of the day and possibly some of Sunday morning as well. Very happy to chip in with whatever needs doing cooking or washing up etc. – if you need me to bring anything let me know.

    Cheers, Paul

    Hi Huw!

Sounds like you had another great weekend from Weenie's brief write up. Shame we missed it – will watch out for when the next one is announced and try our best to get up with the new addition πŸ™‚
Venue looks fantastic as well, they just keep getting better and better… you hiring out Windsor castle next per chance? πŸ™‚

Cheers and hopefully chat/see you soon.

    Hi TFS,

I hope you and the FS family are doing well!

Yes, it was a great weekend. I've just got back from holiday, so I'll get to writing it up over this weekend.

The venue was the nicest one yet, but it wasn't as clean cut as the pictures suggested. The venue hosts stag dos and hen nights, and in parts is was a little rough around the edges. However, for the price and what it offered, it was perfect. So much so, a few people suggested making life easy and keeping with this one for more future meet ups.

Ha ha. Yes, I'm trying to make each one a little better each time. It'll never meet everyone's needs, but I want to make a point of getting everyone's feedback, and making tweaks as I go along to ensure people are finding increased value in them. #Windsorby2020

I hope you can make the next one. M brought her little man along to meet everyone. He's officially the youngest attendee to have a SIPP! πŸ™‚

    All the best
    Huw
