Youtube: UK Gathering UPDATE – Obsessed With Devizes

UK Gathering Update (8 mins)

Where are we with the UK Gathering Down South?
Unfortunately, we don’t have the numbers to make Pine Tree viable this time around.
Fear not, all is not lost!
I’ve found a cottage, in a less secluded location, which is half the size and a 1/3 of the price. I’ve tried to keep it close to Pine Tree as there were some people local to Devizes who were interested.
The details are below. Click on the link to check it out.
Cheyne Cottage:
Mill Road, Potterne, Devizes, Wilts, SN10 5ND
Website – http://cheynecottage.co.uk
£340 for 2 nights. Can sleep up to 8 people and it’s free on 16-18th October.
Are you interested?
If so, please leave a comment below. If you committed to coming/stopping over at Pine Tree, could I ask you once again to confirm that you’re happy as I’ve changed the location. I have pre-booked your places (ahead of new people that might be interested) so you won’t lose your spot. Just give me the nod.

We only need 2 other people to stop overnight to make this financially viable. We can have up to 6 others including me and Lou.

So, what do you think?

    Hey Huw,

I am still happy to come and stop over. One of the big pulls for the original choice of Pinetree was that there was plenty of space for everyone, including those that just visit for the day, to mingle around. Do we still have this facility in the cottage or will it be a case of heading out every morning and then finding a location to meet up with everyone?

    Hey Huw
Still not able to make this one but the best of luck with it – fantastic that you were able to get an alternative (and much cheaper) location at such short notice.

    Hey Huw,

Just sent you a long-ish email, to summarise – if you are critically short then we would stay to make up numbers and make sure this goes ahead; if you have enough already then we would come for the days and pony up a contribution.

Don't get too stressed about the final hours of office work – the reasons behind leaving haven't changed!

By the way, I'd really love to see the other videos you mentioned towards the end, the ones on your journey to self-employment etc. Having a series where you document what's happening would be super helpful and provide a really interesting insight into someone who is really going for FIRE under their own steam so to speak. Plus, I think you'd appreciate looking back on them from time to time to see your progress and how you've changed and grown on your business journey.

    Cheers

    Hi FIbrarian,

    Great news!

I agree. Pine tree would have been fantastic for free space indoor and outdoor, and I hope this cottage fits the bill. (I'm sure it will)

My plan is to fully utilise the house. The indoor space seems reasonable from the pictures online. The idea is to use a self catered location so we don't have to find a spot or shell out more money on food and drink.

If the weathers good or if people feel like having a wonder, we can go and check out the bright lights of Potterne. I'm easy either way.

I'll clarify details on payments soon. I believe I have your email address. Do you have mine?

    See you soon!

    Hi Weenie,

Not to worry. I wasn't expecting your circumstances to change, but I appreciate the kind words of support.

I must put forward my Stock picks to you by Wed too!

    Hi EdwardJBean,

Thank you for the kind offer of staying over to make it happen. It looks lke we're going to be OK based on the comments above. Hooray!

I'm going to have a think about a suitable charge for day guests. I want to encourage people to go, but not take the piss out of the people that committed to stopping over (me and Lou being two).

Thank you for the support on the final hours of work support. It's been an up and down week for me, but I'm pleased to say I've finished strong and I'm very excited about everything.

I'm looking forward to speaking to you in person very soon!

    Hello again!

That's great to hear, thanks for the encouragement. I want to do a lot more reflective videos on youtube. To be honest the videos are currently a variation on FIRE escape chat, which means 'jack' to everyone else out there.

I think you're spot on. I enjoy and value watching other people in a position I want to be in and I'm sure others feel the same. I've not thought about the timeline aspect, but you're right. That's a nice bonus.

I'll be in touch about the payment. I plan on taking it on myself and then asking the contributions afterwards to ensure we don't lose the space.

    See you soon!

    Hola Huw!

Loving the persistence and motivation behind making this happen. I'm still in as a day guest and happy to contribute a reasonable fee towards it. I agree that day visitors should contribute at least something as they'll still be making use of the facilities.

Keen to know whether there will be any sort of set structure to the day? I know Firestarter wasn't interested in having set speeches etc but I think some form of pre-planned discussion points or similar would be useful.

    Hi Huw!

As mentioned on other posts and in emails I am still up for coming for one day/evening.

I will either come for the morning and leave early afternoon on Sunday or later afternoon Saturday and stay as late as I can hack it (which probably won't be that late as I'm an old man now haha)

I may be biased but a fee of £10 seems fair to me for day guests, if you get 10 day guests over the weekend that is £100 off the cost of your overnight accomodation which should be a nice balance between day and night guest costs…?

With you on the overwhelmed feeling about leaving work and having lots of other plates spinning, I have exactly the same feeling right now. It is quite daunting! Maybe we can set up a help group at the meetup to talk about each others feelings and work through it all together… :OD
All jokes aside, it would be great to hear more of your thoughts on it all and it always helps talking to people in the same boat I find.

    Cheers!

    Hi Guy,

I was hell bent on making it happen and it feels great to know that's it's definitely happening. I'm looking forward to meeting what are now familiar faces, and meeting new folk like you.

I want to put a 'bit' of structure in the days to make the most of it. Having some structure won't be to everyone's liking, but based on the feedback I'm receiving, it means more to people to have some than it does to leave it out. There's enough space in the cottage for people to do their own thing if they're not interested too. So all around it serves both parties – Perfect!

    See you soon Guy!

    Hi TFS,

Great to hear that you're up for coming along once again. Your plans sound good to me. If you make your mind up closer to the time, could I ask you to drop me a 'rough' idea of time/day your coming, as some people will be interested to meet you and it'll be nice to let others know when you're arriving – not set in stone or anything!

I was initially thinking £10-20. I've received suggestions ranging from £20-£50! I want to try and find a balance of incentivising people to stop over and make a weekend of it and cater for day visitors. Without the overnight commitment from people, we wouldn't get a venue like this. As a penny pincher, I want to make sure a day visit isn't a deterrent with a high cost or too low to piss the people off that are stopping over. I don't see it being any more than £20 personally, regardless of the suggestions. I'll split all contributions with the people stopping over to minimise their share.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the overwhelm front. I agree entirely. In fact the act of just reading that short comment from you helped. A problem shared is a problem halved as they say. (Not sure who but 'they' do)

I've seen an email from you regarding a skype chat. I'll reply to you now with my availability this week and you can let me know if anything works for you.

I'm sorry to hear that! Not to worry, I'm going to be planning the next date a lot more in advance. I hope you can make that one.

I hope all is well with you!
