The ‘Frugal Fun Bus’ is coming to town and nothing is going to stop our mindful spending approach. Get your free jugs of tap water at the ready. Stock up on your complimentary drinks, sauces and pine cones because we’re not leaving York without them. We want to get our money’s worth!

OK, we’re not going to steal pine cones…… because we’ve earned them! No seriously, this weekend isn’t necessarily about being as tight as possible (although you’re welcome to be). I actually spent quite a lot of money last time (for me), and I didn’t mind at all. I was with great people, I rarely treat myself – as you might see from my monthly Income & Expenses – and as it’s a trice annual event….. why not.

It was bloody refreshing to be with people that thought so keenly on how much money they were spending, but it didn’t stop us from having a good time. 6 of us went for dinner on the Saturday night and everyone one of us ordered from the set menu, and no-one passed comment or judgement. It was bliss!

The weekend has ‘almost’ no agenda.

What do you mean by ‘almost’ Huw?

We have a set time booked to spend in the Garden Courtyard, of the Stonegate Yard (noon to 4.15pm), and we have Weenie’s ‘Monkey Stock League Challenge’ blind draw during that time. That’s it!

Everything else is on the fly and we’ll just have a good time being in each others company. People can stay with us the whole weekend or come and go as they please. It’s important for me to make the weekend relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.

You Don’t Need To Be A Blogger / Investing Expert

Some of us will talk about investing, Blogging, ER, frugal living, and side hustles. Others will talk about life history, hobbies and pine cones. It really doesn’t matter.

I’ve received a couple of messages from people saying they don’t feel they ‘know enough’ about the topics we talk about on our Blogs to warrant being there. I couldn’t discourage you from thinking that more!

Come along for a chat, make some friends, share some tips, learn some stuff, and most importantly have some fun!

You’ll Fit Right In, I Promise

Some other people commented on feeling a little intimidated by coming into ‘the group’. To start with, we’ve only met once before, so we only know each others faces. We’re still getting to know each other.

I’m not just saying this, but the group of people that attended last time, could not have been more welcoming and nice. Lou, my other half, was a little concerned she might be out of her depth, as she’s doesn’t know a lot about Investing, ER, and Side Hustles. She’s also a bit of an introvert. She had a fantastic time, and is just as excited as I am about meeting up again.

To reassure some of you somewhat. It looks like we’ll have a nice blend of regular’s and first timers coming along, so you won’t be the odd one out.

Also, we had a couple of people turn up on their own last time. We have a few more coming on their own to York this weekend, so please don’t let it hold you back. Come and say hello!

I Can’t Make This One

It’s not a problem. I plan on doing one every Spring, Summer and Autumn. The next one will be somewhere in the South East (TBC) in Sep/Oct and I’ll confirm the details later in Aug/early Sep.

I’ll be doing my best to write up the weekend for those of you that can’t make it. I’m also entering new territory by filming parts from the weekend, and I plan on sharing it with you all on my new Youtube Channel* – FFB40.

*I’ve been taking requests and I’m happy to continue taking requests, for people not wanting to be filmed – I hope for your benefit there’s more than just me and Lou on camera! ๐Ÿ™‚

Two Sleeps To Go!

It’s now starting to sink in and I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone again, and I’m also excited about meeting some new faces.

Lou and I will be driving up on Friday morning and we should get there around lunch time. We’re going to get settled into the hotel room and then make our way into town. Not sure where or what time yet.

If you’re around please fell free to call my mobile. If you don’t have my number yet, send me an email with your details, times/dates you’ll be there (approx), and I’ll email it back to you – hrdavies82@gmail.com

Me and Lou will happily spend the afternoon together on our own, or we’d be just as happy to have 20 people join us. We really don’t mind!

I hope you all have a safe and pleasant journey getting to York and I look forward to seeing you very soon.

PS. Please leave a comment below if you attended the last one and to let other first timers know what it was like.

PPS. Please leave a comment if you’re generally excited about the weekend ahead!

For those still debating on whether to go or not, I turned up at the last gathering on my own and I'll be attending on my little ownsome again. Although it was a little daunting at first (perhaps that's just me when about to meet new people), as Huw says, everyone was very warm and welcoming, just regular friendly folk! It was just great to talk to people of different ages, who are at different stages of their FI journeys.

I look forward to catching up with folk I met last time and seeing some new faces.

Just printed of the FTSE 350 list and busy cutting them out, ready for my Monkey Stocks League challenge draw!

Huw – I'll drop you a text on what time I'll be arriving, likely to be late afternoon.

A shame that the weather isn't going to be great, but as always, I have my fingers crossed.

Now, the usual dilemma of 'what to wear?' haha!

Sounds fantastic, Huw. It will be a blast I am sure.

I will get to one of these eventually, I hope! A wonderful idea. Superb that you have put these together!

Have a great weekend everyone who is going! Can't wait to read a little report on your doings!

    Hi D2,

I'm really looking forward to it now. Just one sleep away!

I'm hoping that they'll become a regular feature and that you can make the next one we set up down south. I set the gathering up selfishly to meet more like minded people, as none of my friends are interested in investing, ER, FI etc. It was refreshing to be around so many people that are into the same stuff. Our area of interest does tend to be quite rare in modern society.

I watched a report on BBC Breakfast (that Lou was watching) a few months back and their money reporter 'Steph' was warning the general public on the volatility of shares and investing. An 'expert' on the report countered saying cash is the safest option for people, which she agreed with. They made it out that investing in shares in dangerous. So's driving a car in the wrong hands, but it's also a vehicle to freedom if used correctly, and anyone can do it.

I've never thought this about the BBC before, (as I don't watch much TV) but I thought it was irresponsible of them to be reporting so harshly on shares, when in my view every single person in the world could benefit from passive Index Investing to some degree. People need to be encouraged with the mindset of most, not warned.

I want to change this opinion on investing, and how we think about money in general – like being frugal, thinking about retirement (not necessarily ER), working towards FI etc. I hope we can all work towards getting this message out there in some form or another and help people solve the 'Money Problem' so they can spend their time on other areas of life. Currently, a lot of people worry about money and do little about it.

I'm not quite sure where that came from, sorry D2. You were only wishing us luck!

I'll do my best to capture the weekend for you and I hope to meet you in person on the next one.

Thank you for leaving that comment Weenie. I couldn't agree more!

I forgot about your mammoth cutting out task. Are you going to finish in time?! ๐Ÿ™‚

No problem at all. My number is the same since SoA so drop me a text when you're there and I'll let you know where we are.

I've heard the weather isn't going to be great, it's a good job there's plenty of indoor options up there. We'll make the most of it. If I remember rightly, SoA was bloody freezing, albeit dry, so we didn't get a lot of 'outside time' then either. Nevermind. I'll cross my fingers too. We must worry about more important issues like….. what to wear. ๐Ÿ™‚

    See you tomorrow Weenie!

I am very excited and looking forward to meeting with like minded people again.

My wife Alison is not into financial matters at all but fully supports the quest we are both on and just leaves it to me to decide what we invest and where. She was not too bothered about going to SoA as she felt she would be out of her depth and have nothing to talk about. It could not have been further from the truth and she had a great time as everyone was so friendly and open. This time round we are both as excited as each other about York.

Since the last meeting my mindset has completely changed and I look at life in a better way. Meeting with people who don't think I am nuts when talking about money and ways to invest it was a breath of fresh air. I learnt a lot just listening to people, what they were doing, their journey through life, what they are striving for and more importantly, why.

We plan on arriving mid afternoon on Friday (crikey it is tomorrow) with the intention of spending as much time with the group as possible. Alison has said that at some point over the weekend she wants to visit Betty's tea rooms.

Thanks for leaving the comment Richard!

It's brilliant to hear that you took a lot from the last meet up. I hope York can provide just as much or even more value for you this time.

I can't believe that it's tomorrow either. Let me know when you're free and I'll you know where we are in York. I've been told by people at work t check out Betty's. I could take it or leave it personally, but I think Lou would like it too. I'm happy to join you both if you wish at some stage.

I'm popping off to bed shortly to get an early night. See you both tomorrow!

    Much appreciated

    Hi Hew
It's Friday afternoon and it's lashing down here in York…..but tomorrow is looking good, weather wise. That'll give plenty of opportunity to walk the walls, the river and down through The Shambles, maybe sampling a beer or two on the way. I'd advise visiting Betty's about half eight in the evening when it quietens down for the last hour. Brace yourself for the prices though! Anyway, looking forward to meeting everyone and helping point people in the right direction depending on what they want to do with their visit to the city (as frugally as possible, of course)!

    Hi NMW,

I had a fantastic time, and from what I heard a lot of other people did too.

We'll be going down south in a couple of months, and it's unlikely to be in London, but the idea is to make it reasonably close – ie. one of the neighboring counties. It would be great to meet you in person, as I've enjoyed following your Blog. You'd be the first international visitor too! To the UK Gathering that is, not the UK! ๐Ÿ™‚

I hope you can make it too.

I'll give as much warning of the date as I can. I plan on finalising the needs of the group with the venue selection, and I'll book us in!

Hope to met you in person.
