Summer UK Gathering 2015: York Dates

We have lift-off!

The date for the UK Gathering this summer has now been confirmed. We’re going to be meeting up Friday to Sunday to maximise the time with each other. You don’t have to join us for the entire weekend. You’re more than welcome to join us for a day or even an afternoon if you wish.

Pen’s and calendars at the ready……….

Friday 14th to Sunday 16th August 2015

Lou and I plan on driving up on the Friday morning and I was going to suggest a meet up time of 11am. This should provide enough time for the southern travelers to make their way up, whilst allowing enough of Friday to catch up. I haven’t finalised a meet up location in York yet, but I’m planning on finding a similar location to what we found in SoA – One with pubs & cafes near by, walking potential and not too crowded.

Weenie had a great idea of trying to get a discount on B&B/hotel accommodation by agreeing a deal for a group booking. It would be nice to have everyone in the same location and we could all save a few quid. If you’d be interested in this option, please let me know below and I’ll see what discounts I can get.

Watch this space for updates on location and accommodation. I hope you can all make it!

Glad you got a date sorted out.

Both myself and Alison will be attending the full event. I like the idea of a group booking in a B&B or Hotel. As you say we will all be in one place and if there is a communal area we can gather in there and talk without interference from others.

Alison is in York this coming Saturday (23rd April) and can take a look and see what might be suitable or if anyone has any ideas she can case the joint.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Just realised I looked at May instead of April on my calendar. Alison will be in York on Saturday 25th April.

    Hey Huw,

Really looking forward to meeting everyone again in York, and hopefully some new people – more bloggers as well as readers!

We've got lots of family in York and nearby York, so we shan't need to book a B & B for ourselves, although I think that is a great idea for everyone and I would do it too, if we weren't staying with family.

I don't know yet if we will be there in the daytime on Friday, it is more likely that we'll come up in the evening I think.

    Cheers

    Hi Huw
Thanks for sorting this out – that date is in my diary! I'll be staying for at least the Saturday night so I'd be interested in the group accommodation booking thing. If I can stay more a night, I'll let you know, not sure if I can book the Friday off. Looking forward to meeting the folks I met in Stratford upon Avon again but also hopefully will see some new faces.

Well done Huw! Having thought my summer calendar was all taken, I think there's a reasonable chance I can make it for at least a bit – I will confirm separately. Go FFBY go!

Hi Huw, I should be able to make the Saturday (but probably just for a few hours late morning/afternoon). It will be great to meet everyone.

    Hi Richard,

I'm glad you can both make it!

I hope we're able to be accommodated in the same place (or close by), as it would help to extend the time we all spend together. If Alison is happy to put forward some suggestions, I'd be all ears. Especially due to how high she raised the bar with the restaurant pick in SoA!

    Speak soon!

    Hi Weenie,

My pleasure! I hope you're able to get the Friday off, but we'll certainly take your presence for the two days.

Likewise Weenie, it'll be great to meet the same people again and develop our relationships as well as meet new people. I find the whole thing so exciting!

I'll keep you posted on the group booking too.

    All the best!

    Hey M,

Likewise. I can't wait! I'm looking forward to spending some more time with the same people, and meeting some new folk too.

That's a great stroke of luck on the family front. Thank you for letting me know too. I'll get an idea of numbers and do a ring around.

I think the specifics on time and perhaps even the day might be a little early for a few people so don't worry M.

Looking forward to meeting you and the family again (That's Mr M and Little M, not the York family) 🙂

    Cheers

    Hi Cerridwen,

It would be great to meet you in person, even if only for a few hours. It really made a difference meeting people in person (does that even make sense – I think you know what I mean!)

    All the best

This sounds good. I'm completely new to the scene and havn't really got my own blog going but it would be cool to meet like minded people. I will keep checking for updates and with being in Leeds it wouldn''t be too far for me to travel.

    Hi Gymoney,

Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad you're interested in meeting up.

When we have more specifics on locations and times, I'll post them here.

Good luck on getting your Blog up and running!

    Cheers

  • Hi Huw,

I'll see if I/we can make it! Would love to meet up with everyone as it sounded like you all had such a good time at the last one.

Will be in touch soon hopefully with a confirmation.

    Cheers!

    Hi TFS,

It would be great if you could make it. It would be nice to meet you in person, as it made a real difference to me at the last one in Spring. I understand that dates and commitments make it more challenging, not to mention commutes. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Cheers

  • A question to all… any advice on frugal accomodation!?
We had a look and can't find anything below £90. Air BnB's are all expensive and even the Premier Inn is like £90.

It's a long way to come for us so can't really just pop in for one night but if it's going to cost us nearly £300 just for the 3 nights accomodation I'm not sure it fits into the budget 🙁

    Cheers!

Would love to come to one of these, but alas; York is perhaps too far for my to be able to justify the travel time/expense required. That could change however depending on where my project at the time is based so will keep the date in mind.

I'm hoping the Huw will find the time to sort out a group booking rate at a B&B, like how people do it for weddings…however, it's getting closer to the date and I might have to sort something out myself in the meantime!

    Hi Huw
Just found your blog via Early Retirement Guy. I live in York, so I can certainly drop by and meet some like minded people! I've been a follower of the ERE guys (mostly the American ones) for about three years and in the last year have started discovering more of the UK based bloggers like yourself. I'm currently "living the dream", retired at fifty with the option of staying that way going forward, a situation I'd been unconsciously preparing for over about twenty years (that's when I first discovered the Motley Fool and decided to (1) clear my debts and (2) start regular investing into index tracking funds.) My plan wasn't really early retirement, I just enjoyed the security of saving regularly, watching my investments grow over time and being a tight B8&^@£!.
Any help I can give you with organising the weekend, let me know.

    Hi Jim McG,

Great news. Thanks for reaching out!

It would be great to meet yo in York, especially as you're so close to the location.

First of all, congratulations on providing a life of financial freedom for yourself. That's what I and many of my readers are looking to replicate. It would be great to have someone like yourself at the gathering to help inspire myself and others.

I'm planning on finalising details this weekend for York. I'll gladly receive any help on the location for the gathering itself. I'll drop you an email to discuss that further.

Thanks again for stopping by, and I hope we're able to meet up next month!

    Cheers
    Huw

No problem Huw, we should be definitely able to meet over that weekend. There's a lot of good local advice on the Trip Adviser York forum for things to do in the city, places to stay, how to get here cheaply etc.. (I'm an occasional contributor when people are looking for good real ale pubs to visit!) Look forward to meeting you, and I'm now following you on Twitter as JiminYork if you want to get in touch directly.
